Universal Studios

We had some USC friends offer us free tickets to Universal Studios.  So of course we went!

We didn't bring a camera, so thank goodness for T's mighty, mighty iphone camera.

It rained off and on the whole day.  But it was just drizzling and if it rains more than 1/8" Universal gives you free passes to come back again within a month!  I actually think it was good that it was rainy because it wasn't crowded at all.  I think the longest we had to wait in line was about 15 minutes.  Most attractions (Jurassic Park, The Mummy, Haunted House) had no line at all.  It was fabulous.  Universal was also giving out free hot chocolate because of the rain.

Universal was not what I expected.  It thought it would be like Lagoon - tons of rides.  Not so much.  Just Jurassic Park, The Mummy, and The Simpsons.  The Mummy was excellent and I really liked The Simpsons ride even though I have never seen a whole episode of that show and really don't like the small bits that I have seen.

All these little balls were in the Curious George place.  They were soft and we had the equivalent of a dry snowball fight.  There were three levels and many things to launch the balls, vacuum the balls, catch the balls... It was a lot of fun.  Way cooler than sneaking into the play place at MickyD's as an adult.

There were "how did they do that?" shows and exhibits.  We saw a whole set lit on fire in front of us in "Backdraft."  We also went to a special effects show where they add people from the audience to movies using green screen and dubb over and other stuffs like that.  T was a volunteer during the special effects show.  He did the King Kong roar and was part of a deception where he was killed by a monster.

T at home in the Director's chair.

There were quite a few shows.  Shrek 4-D, Terminator 3D, an animal show, and a Blues Brothers show.  They were all okay, but not anything I would want to see again.  Even for free.  WaterWorld was supposed to be really cool, but it was canceled because of the rain.  Go figure.  Here we are in "the fashion of the future" 3D glasses.

There was lots of memorabilia from famous and not so famous movies throughout the park.  The back lot tour was pretty cool, but I thought there would be more to it.  We saw the famous sets of Wisteria Lane from "Desperate Housewives," the Bates Motel,  and the pond they make look like oceans and lakes.  We also saw a flash flood in the Old Mexico set and a flash flood inside a subway tube.  The flash floods were very impressive.

We had a fabulous time but I don't think it is worth a full price $69 ticket.  It's worth about a $30 ticket.  It's especially not for people who have kids under the age of 12 - there's just not enough for them to do.  We did everything in the park (including two rides twice) in 8 hours.   We'll be going again within a month to use our free rain passes!

P.S.  We stayed pretty dry with just our hoodies until we were leaving and it started to rain hard and the sole of my shoe broke!
