I made some cookies. They didn't burn to the pan. I used the last of the parchment paper on one pan. The pans looked fine. I put them in the dishwasher like I have many times before. Except this time the pans came out looking like this:
I have no idea what happened. They used to be a beautiful light silver all over without a single burn mark or blemish and now they look like... this. Can we still eat food off of these? Is there any kind of scrubbing that will make them normal again? Should I just toss them? Any idea what made this even happen to begin with?

That happened to me last year. I have no clue why. I suspect something to do with heat (old dishwasher) and/or dishwasher soap (some states passed some laws to do with low-phosphate dishwasher soaps, so lots of dishwasher companies changed their formulas to comply). But the pans are still fine. Not pretty anymore, but still functional. You can scrub and see if it helps. For our pans, scrubbing helped some areas, but mostly not. I still use them, but most of the time I use parchment paper or foil just because our current dishwasher doesn't clean them well, so it makes it easier to wash.
ReplyDeleteWeeeeird. I scrubbed a cookie sheet with Barkeeper's Friend once and it made it all shiny and pretty and new again. It might work on whatever is on your sheets. Just wash it really well afterward!

Glad Mary knew cause I wouldn't have a clue! Growing up my Mom always said that if we always hand wash the pots and pans and larger items that they would last longer, so maybe it's true!
ReplyDeleteWe had that happen to our pans a while ago. Best we can tell it was because we washed them on a "high temperature" wash. We have washed them many times since (avoiding high temperatures) and the pans look better than they did after that one wash but I honestly don't remember what they looked like originally to compare back to... but we use them all the time and haven't died yet :)
