I'm not a very crafty person. Sometimes I like doing crafty stuff, but I don't do it often and I don't have a natural knack for it.

Before Pippa was born I wanted to make her a hair bow holder like this. Super cute, right?!
I bought all the stuff and then Pippa was born the next day (3 weeks early!). Obviously, it didn't get done right then. Or later either because we moved to Germany and we really limited the things we brought with us.
Finally, two years later and just before Baby Roxy is to be born, I made the bow holder. I used this tutorial from momdot.com. (it's where the first photo is from, as well)
It's not perfect, but I think it is perfectly adorable.
Sometimes the tutorial instructions weren't clear - there are no measurements for the size of the bodice or the skirt! So I had to eyeball it. (If you were wondering, my bodice is 11.5 inches along the bottom and 10.5 inches tall. The skirt is 15.5 inches long.

We have big families which = a lot of birthdays and anniversaries and they are hard to keep track of - even with putting them in our phones. For a while I've wanted to make something like this birthday board - minus the Ute theme (source here).
But that's a lot of work and a lot of small pieces. I recently saw this birthday board (etsy source) and it looks so much cleaner / simpler. Which is definitely more our aesthetic. This one sells on etsy for $22.
I made ours for about $4.
I think the square board would proportionally look better, but the square wood piece was $4 and this rectangle piece was 79 cents. The knob was $1.50 from the hardware store. I had to use bigger tags because some months are full of events. Plus with these paper tags, it is super easy to add a new event. Winning. We hung it by the front door so it's an easy reminder and we see it all the time.

I am impressed! I've been thinking of doing the b-day thing for a while too but been putting it off. Maybe I'll finally get around to it after seeing your success. ;)
ReplyDeleteI think your bow holder looks better than the original! Cute! I want to make a birthday holder too. Where do people find time?
ReplyDeleteI love that the bow holder is on the door to her room. These are great!
